DEPARTMENT OF MALAYALAM

The department of Malayalam was established in the year of 1968. Degree courses were started in the year 1968.Diverse methods of teaching are adopted to cater to the requirement of different learning segment of the students. The teachers ensure active participation of students and promote their talents. Different methods of teaching are adopted. Lecture method, Seminar, Discussion, Demonstration and stage performance of Drama, Poetry and Short story are regularly practiced. The teachers actively guide the students and the students utilize their potentials to the maximum. Continuous evaluation is a common practice. Seminars were conducted in the Class level, College level and State level. Funds from UGC and other agencies like V.T. Memorial Trust are the resources. In collaboration with near by colleges different programmes are organized to enrich learning experience. Students undertake small projects according to their research aptitude.

        Modern teaching techniques using audiovisuals enrich the learning experience. Special attention is imparted to the slow learners to improve their performance and quick learners are given impetus to win meritorious achievements. Question banks are also given to students. The student performance and teacher performance are continuously evaluated through and effective feedback mechanism.

       The Department aims the overall development of personality of students by instilling a sense of confidence in them. Malayalam Literary Association develops the literary aptitudes of students and provides a stage for presenting what they have studied in the classroom. Activities like `Kaviyarangu` give chance for growth to the budding poets. The Literary Association frequently arranges talks of Eminent Literary figures which give inspiration to students. The Malayalam Department releases Manuscript Magazine every year to bring out the literary talents of students.

        All the students of Malayalam Department are actively participating in extra curricular and extension activities. Their activities are recognized in the College level, University level, State level and National level.
       Intimate relationship exists between students and teachers. They utilize tutorial hours for effective guidance and counselling. Majority of the students are coming from socially and financially backward sector. Financial assistance is given to the most deserving cases by the joint effort of the Department. On the whole, the activities of Malayalam Department are intended to make learning an interesting experience to the students. The success of these efforts truly gets translated in to excellent academic results.

Department Activities

2010-2011

The Malayalam Association was inaugurated by Prof. S. Joseph, famous  Dalit poet.  He also released the manuscript magazine 'Vaikhari'.  The day was unique with the visualized characters of Vaikkom Muhammed Basheer presented by third year degree students and the staging of the drama 'Abhijana Sakuthalam' and 'Chandala Bhishuki' by the second and first year students.  In connection with the 'Keralapiravi' the association organized a lecture by Dr. Muse Mary George   on 'The Influence of Language on Culture.'  A new forum named 'Akshara Jalakam' will give space to express the creativity of students.  In association with The Folk Lore Club the association conducted 'Navoru', a day of folk lore performance with a special audio effect which indeed captivated the audience.  The performance was done by a prestigious team of performers from Nattupolima, Kanjoor.

 

2009-10

              A UGC sponsored National Seminar on 'Agrarian Culture in the Folklores of Kerala' was jointly organized along with the department of Botany was on 6th and 7th August 2009. It was inaugurated by Dr.A.K.Nambyar, secretary, Kerala Folklore Academy. It was followed by a 'Karanava koottam'. Eleven seminar papers were presented during the session.

Malayalam Association

The Malayalam Association was inaugurated by the famous post modern poet K.R. Tony, on 26th October 2009. Manuscript magazine by the Malayalam students named as 'Spandanam 2009' was released on that occasion. Dr. M.P.Vijayalakshmi, HOD, presided over the function. Prof.Ambujakshi, former faculty of Sanskrit Department gave a fine talk. A project prepared by Chinju Surendran, Final year Malayalam student under the guidance of Prof.C.D.Mary Juliet was also released on the occasion.
