DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION 

The department of Physical Education has been functioning very well ever since the start of the college in 1964. The department has produced quite a number of university, State and Indian players in basketball, Volleyball and Kabaddi.

Admission to various courses is made through sports quota seats available in each course based on their Sports achievement during their school/ plus two classes. Those who have higher achievements would be provided with free boarding and lodging. For those students who excel in their respective games and who are economically backward are given free hostel accommodation, food and free tuitions.

Many qualified persons in the filed of Sports Psychology, Physiotherapy, Sports Medicine, Diet and Sports administration are consulted to make these players improve in their respective games.

Many of the outside agencies, other institutions and Universities are also always in touch with our department for Technical advice for their infrastructure development etc. Dr. Tony Daniel, Head of the Department of Physical Education is nominated as one of the member of the Technical Committee constituted for the relaying of Synthetic Track at Kerala University Stadium, Trivandrum. Kerala State Government has nominated him as one of the Standing Committee Members of Kerala State Sports Council- the apex body of Sports in the State - He is also a member of the Technical Committee of Athletics Federation of India, New Delhi

The College management has been giving all kind of support for the betterment of players. Most of the outstanding players were given free boarding and lodging facilities by the College management. Those players who were not financially very sound, were given special scholarships to meet their educational expenses. Once they were proven their caliber, the department of physical education has taken interest in their placement in various departments like Railways, LIC, Customs, Neyveli Lignite Corporation, KSEB etc. Most of the outstanding players from our colleges were well placed after their studies.

The management has been supporting the department in assigning qualified and experienced Coaches in Basketball, Kabaddi and Volleyball to train the College teams, which has given rich dividends. Kerala State Sports Council has started Sports Hostels in these disciplines knowing the potential and efficiency in management of the college.

Two different All Kerala Tournaments have been organized since 1993 in the college every year with the help of the management and Parent Teacher Association, during September-October. This is one of the best-organized "Women Only" tournaments in the state. These tournaments help the college to build up a very healthy relation ship with other institutions and the public.

The Department and its faculty is extending their service to other agencies like Associations of various disciplines like Basketball, Volleyball, Athletics, Kabaddi, Cycle Polo, Judo etc. Most of the sports women in our college are involved in the organization of various tournaments, which take place in and around the town. These tournaments include the University, intercollegiate, inter-district and State Championships. Those sports persons who are not actively participating in the tournaments are given the opportunity of organizing various aspects of the conduct of the championship - namely reception and accommodation of the outside teams and their food and refreshments affairs including office management etc.

Department manages a fairly well equipped Health Club in the College Campus. This club is open to the College Staff and the students. These facilities are fully utilized by our sports persons. Many of the non-sports women and a few of the staff members are regular visitors to the health club.

Regular training is given to players of basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, and judo etc. We have a couple of basketball, volleyball and kabaddi courts. All the courts are well maintained.

Teams are given frequent theory classes with the help of video clipping of team training. These kinds of classes help the teams to have wider perception about their team strategy and its workouts. The ultimate result of these kind of training seems to be tremendous.

Regular classes on Yoga are imparted to the sports and non-sports students. Yoga enhances the normal performance of the students it helps the students to attain a more economical physical activity through more fluent physical movements. The result of Yoga is more visible in the field of competition.

2011-2012

       Kum. Ashey Mathew, 2^nd year B A English student, represented M G University for the South West zone Inter university Basketball championship held at Sreekandapuram, Kannur , and the team secured 3^rd place and qualified to the All  India Inter university  Basketball championship.

      College Athletics team was the overall champions in the Womens section in the 55^th Ernakulam District Athletics Championship held at Maharaja's College Stadium on 16^th -18^th September 2011.

      Kum. Emilda P Raju, of 3^rd B A Economics student, attained 4 gold medals in the M G University Inter Collegiate Swimming championship held at L N C P E Trivandrum. She was declared as the fastest swimmer in M.G. University and was awarded the individual championship.

2010 - 2011

         The Department of Physical Education organized the 17^th Rev.Sr.Redempta Memorial South India Intercollegiate Basketball and 17^th Msgr. Augustine Maveli Memorial All Kerala Intercollegiate Volleyball tournament from 25^th to 28^th, January 2011.  Sri Neeraj George Baby, Bronze Medalist in the World Badminton Championship inaugurated the tournament and Sri M.T. Jacob, Chairman; Aluva Muncipality distributed the prizes to the Winners of Basketball championship.

         Sri V D Satheeshan, MLA was the Guest of Honour for the inaugural function of the Msgr Augustine Maveli Memorial 17^th All Kerala    Volleyball tournament. Various Colleges participated in this Championship. Sri K J Oustine Rex, PTA Vice President, distributed prizes to the Winners of Volleyball tournament. This year too, our college retained the Winner's trophy in the Basketball   tournament.

Ø             In the 65^th Fr. Bartholomew Memorial Inter collegiate Volleyball tournament.

Student Achievement

Ø             Nishamol N, of volleyball team participated in the Youth state volleyball championship held at Thrissur

Ø             Bincy Babu   in the Junior State volleyball championship held at Thrissur.

Ø             Nimisha Joseph participated in the Senior State Volleyball Championship held at Kannur.

Kabaddi Team

Kabaddi team participated  in the M G University Kabaddi championship and secured 4^th place.

Ms Aswathy K P got selection to the M G University Kabaddi team.

Netball team

Netball Team secured Runners up trophy in the M.G University Netball Championship held at Assumption College, Changanaserry.  Ragi Sajeevan, Honey.M.J., Renjisha K., Akhila Mannual, and  Jilna Jose  got selection to the M.G University Netball team.

Athletic Team

Ø             Athletic team secured team championship in the women's section Ernakulam District Athletic Meet conducted at Maharaja's College Synthetic track,

Ø             secured team championship in the Keralosavam Athletic Meet at  Muncipal Ground, Aluva.

Ø             Ms Lakshmy Sivakumar secured First prize in Shot put and in Discus throw in the District level Keralosavam Athletic meet held at Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha.

Ø             Athletic team also participated in the M.G. University Athletics Championship held at Ernakulam.

2009-10

Dept. of Physical Education organized the 16^th Rev. Sr. Redempta Memorial South India Intercollegiate Basketball tournament in August 2009.  Sri.Baby Mathew Somatheeram, M.D, Jeevan TV inaugurated the championship.  In this championship our college won the Winner's trophy after a gap of 5 years.   The basketball team achieved the following championships:

Ø             Fr.Bartholomeo Memorial Basketball tournament at S.H College, Thevara

Ø             U.C Trophy at U.C College, Aluva

Ø             The intercollegiate basketball tournament at Assumption College, Changanassery

Ø             17^th Karunya Evangelic Memorial Basketball championship at Coimbatore

Ø             M.G University Intercollegiate Basketball Championship. 

Student Achievements

Ø             Miss.Leena Jacob and Ms.Alphy George represented Kerala State for the Women's National championship held at Bhopal.

Ø             Ms. Lisha M.D, Anu Joseph and Akhila Manuel participated in the Junior State Basketball championship held at Malapuram.

Ø             Ms.Lisha M.D, Ms.Linda M.J, Ms.Jilna Jose and Ms.Anjana Michael were selected to represent M. G. University Basketball Team for the South-West Zone Basketball Championship held at St Peter's College and the team won the winner's trophy. They qualified for the All India Interuniversity championship held at Kolencherry, and secured third position.

Ø             Ms.Lisha M D and Ms.Jilna Jose represented Kerala state for the Senior National Basketball championship held at Bhopal. 

Ø             Ms. Lisha M D and Ms. Akhila Mannual represented Kerala state for the Junior National Basketball championship held at Indore, Madhya Pradesh.   

The Volley ball team participated in various intercollegiate tournaments:           

Ø             Ms. Nimisha Joseph and Ms.Nishamol N participated in the Senior State Volleyball Championship held at Peringathur.

Ø             Ms.Nimisha Joseph, Ms.Nishamol.N, Ms.Ancy Antony, Ms.Rahana Sadhan and Ms.Aswathy.K.P participated in the women's state championship held at Kasargode.

Ø             Ms.Nimisha Joseph and Ms.Sijy M.T participated in the Youth state championship held at Trivandrum.

The Netball Players

Ø             Won the M.G University Netball Championship held at U.C College, Aluva. Pravisha K, Ragi Sajeevan, Anu Joseph, Honey.M.J, Renjisha K got selection to the M.G University Netball team.

Student Achievements

Ø             Miss.Leena Jacob, Ms.Raji Sajeevan, Ms.Anu Joseph, Ms.Avelyan Maria Jean, Ms Ranjisha K, Ms.Rayana K, Ms.Akhila Manuel and Ms.Honey.M.J were selected to represent Kerala state for the Junior National Netball Championship held at Nasik in December, 09. 

Athletic Team

The athletic team secured team championship in the women's section at EKM District Athletic Meet in September, 09 and participated in the M.G. University Athletics Championship in December, 09. 

Sports Day

Annual Sports competitions were organized at the college sports complex on 2^nd February 2010. Various events were conducted for the Students, Teaching and Non teaching staff.
